Nagarnar project-hit farmer commits suicide

In a tragic incident, a farmer whose land was taken away by the public sector NMDC ltd. for its upcoming Nagarnar Steel plant, on Friday committed suicide by hanging himself to ceiling after he was allegedly denied compensation.

The poor farmer, Panibudu, of village Kasturi was one of dozens of farmers affected by Nagarnar Steel Plant project. Police said on basis of the initial reports that the farmer was frustrated by NMDC’s response and was under severe mental stress for past several months. He was reportedly running into massive debts.

After waiting for four years for land compensation, dozens of farmers hit by the Nagarnar project, launched a relay hunger strike last month under the banner of Kisan Vikas Manch.
