MNREGS canal brings smile on farmers’ faces

Published on:

Villagers of Mahidabra in Chhattisgarh's Kabirdham district are happy with the construction of a canal through their village under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNREGS).

The water of Mahidabra reservoir will now irrigate 75 hectares of agriculture fields of 80 farmers of the village, an official communication said on Thursday.

The villagers say they can also sow Rabi crop along with the traditional monsoon dependent Kharif crop.

The village is home to members of the primitive Baiga tribe and had a reservoir but the villagers were not able to use the water for irrigation.

Their long pending demand for a canal was fulfilled after MNREGS approved the expansion work of the main canal and construction of two minor canals.

The construction got over within the stipulated time.

The canal construction also provided work to 1,455 labourers for 6,503 man days. A remuneration of Rs 12,21,000 was paid to them for the work.
