In a freak accident, an Assistant General Manager of the country’s largest steel maker Bhilai Steel Plant (BSP) of public sector Steel Authority of India ltd (SAIl) died after he fell between tracks inside the plant after being shocked by the loud horn of a loco Engine passing near him on Wednesday.
The BSP during the past few months have been riddled by a number of mishaps — key among them being one that took place in June when six persons, including two DGM level officers, lost their lives and about 30 others hurt after a gas leakage incident at the plant.
Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Bhilai, Rajesh Agrawal said AGM BR Devangan was shocked by the loud horn of a loco engine on the other track after which he lost his balance and fell between the two tracks resulting in possible head injury. The official was also hurt by a push from the engine, he said.
The mishap occurred in BSP’s Blast Furnace Number 1 in the afternoon hours when BR Devangan (53), Assistant General Manager, Blast Furnace Department and In-charge of Highline Area had gone to the Raw Material Unloading Area in Blast Furnace Ore Trench at 12.15 pm, BSP’s Deputy General Manager (DGM), Public Relations, Vijay Mairal said.
“AGM Devangan was injured by a loco coming on the other track. He was rushed to the plant’s main medical post where doctors declared him dead,” he said.
“An enquiry would be conducted into the incident and all possible support would be provided to his family, which includes provision for providing employment to a dependent of the deceased,” Mairal said.
