Minor increase in minimum wages for labours disappointing: Congress

Published on:

State Congress on Monday criticised the Narendra Modi government for     meager increase in           minimum wages of labours and termed it disappointing.

After deceiving farmers with nominal hike in Minimum Support Price of paddy crop, the Centre now gave jolt to the poor     labourers, it said

In a statement state    general secretary and    chairman communication wing of PCC Shailesh Nitin Trivedi said despite the Satpathi committee’s         recommendation to increase the minimum wages of employees to Rs 200 and to hike it to Rs 375, the increase of meager Rs 2 in the         functional rate of Rs 178 was disappointing, he said.

“The intention of the expert committee of labour ministry was that labourers should at least get Rs 9750 per month so that they could be able to give a better life to their family”. It was also mentioned in the economic survey-2019 that in order to decrease disparity and alleviate poverty the minimum wages have to be increased.

It is astonishing that 86% of the states are providing higher minimum wages than the rate fixed by the Centre. It is Rs 240 in Chhattisgarh which is far better that the minimum wages fixed by the Centre, Trivedi further added.
