Union Health and Family Welfare Ministry on Wednesday asked state governments across India to open medical colleges by December 1.
Rajesh Bhushan, Secretary in the Ministry, said in a letter to Chief Secretaries that after considering all relevant factors, the National Medical Commission (NMC) has recommended that the colleges may reopen on or before December 1.
“The NMC has also given a suggestive schedule of training for different classes. Further, the NMC has advised that sufficient numbers of non-Covid beds may be made available in medical college hospitals to facilitate undergraduate medical training,” the Secretary wrote.
He clarified that the Union Ministry has obtained concurrence from the Home Ministry for re-opening the medical colleges in the states and Union Territories.
The letter said the NMC has suggested that in the best interest of medical education and from the point of view of standardization, it is desirable that the medical colleges open at the same time across the country.
