Massive fire at Ravi Bhavan

A major fire broke out on Wednesday at Raipur’s biggest electronics goods market at ‘Ravi Bhavan’ on Wednesday. There were no casualties.

As many as 24 shops including godowns with goods worth crores of rupees were gutted after fire first broke out at the shops engaged in selling of perfumes and plastic products, a senior police official said.

The blaze erupted on the first floor of the building at the perfume shop located in Jai Stambh Chowk behind Zone-7 Municipal Office coming under Golebazar police station limits at around 2.00 pm, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP) (City) Vijay Agrawal informed.

Soon after news related to fire ablaze came in, Mayor Pramod Dubey, District Collector OP Chaudhary, DG Home Guards Girdhari Nayak, Raipur Range Inspector General of Police (IGP) Pradeep Gupta, Superintendent of Police Dr Sanjeev Shukla and several other officials rushed to the spot, the ASP said.

Fire and emergency services were immediately informed after which State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) personnel, 40 fire tenders and police personnel rushed to the spot on getting information about the incident, he said.

Since the shops are located on a narrow street and surrounded by power cables and poles, the team of SDRF personnel and firefighters were facing massive difficulties in undertaking fire fighting operation, said Agrawal said, and added that the fire could not be controlled immediately

Seventeen shops on first floor and seven godowns on second floor also caught fire. The summer heat coupled with wind aided spread of fire, he said.

The exact reason behind the fire was yet to be ascertained, Agrawal said, adding that a case had been registered in this connection and further probe is underway.
