A Maoist militant leader on Tuesday surrendered before security forces in insurgency-hit Dantewada district of Chhattisgarh, police said.
Realising the futility of Maoist movement, Janmilitia Commander Madkam Kanna alias Kanna Rao turned himself in before the security personnel, said a senior police officer, elaborating that the rebel was an active member of Konta Area Committee.
According to the officer, after being inducted into the banned organisation in 2006 as Sangham member, Kanna Rao registered active participation in Naxal activities ongoing in the region.
In 2007, Kanna Rao was elevated as Janmilitia Commander. Several cases are pending against him in police stations of Dantewada and its adjoining districts.
Initial investigation revealed that the surrendered insurgent was expert in assembling and planting Improvised Explosive Device (IED) and was also handling Naxal network in the region, added the officer.
Kanna Rao was involved in several Naxal incidents which took place in the region during the past few years which include blocking connectivity by felling tree and damaging roads, firing on camps of police and security forces, killing of innocent villagers by branding them as police informer, planting IED to hurt security personnel and others.
As per surrender and rehabilitation policy of Chhattisgarh government, necessary assistance will be provided to the Naxal, added the officer.
