A wanted left Wing insurgent who was accused by his own comrades of running away with cash amounting to Rs21 lakh has surrendered before Superintendent of Police, Kanker, RN Das. After surrendering, the guerrilla refuted charges levelled by Maoists that he ran away with Rs21 lakh cash, a senior police informed on Sunday.

Das said that member of Maad and South Bastar Joint Division Committee Suraj alias Mohit has surrendered before the police. According to the police, growing pressure on Naxals in the district and discrimination by Naxals from Andhra Pradesh with those from Chhattisgarh, coupled with some personal problems forced Suraj to shun the path of violence.

Recently, the Naxals had issued a press communiqué in which they had accused Suraj of decamping with Rs 21 lakh cash. Upon primary interrogation, Suraj has denied of having money and termed it as ‘a trap’. However police has decided to form a joint interrogation team for knowing the reality.

Detailing about Suraj, police informed that the insurgent is an expert in printing techniques and was the Editor of an bi-annual Naxal magazine Bhoomkal. The accused was also In-charge of the Naxal Publication Committee. Suraj was also involved in big attacks such as Sulanig ambush in 2011 and attack on security forces in Udanpur in 2012, police claimed.

The insurgent after clearing Higher Secondary board exams had joined Naxal cadre in 2005. After completing training in Maad area he became member of ‘Kiskodo Dalam’ and was Commander of local Area Squad from 2007 till 2011.

After surrendering,  he told the police personnel that dissatisfied with discrimination within Naxal organisation more than 100 local Naxal cadre are willing to rest their arms. The SP further said that rehabilitation of Suraj would be undertaken as per the policy of the State Government.
