Well known as the Nightingale of India, Bharat Ratna recipient Lata Mangeshkar, who passed away on Sunday, had links with Chhattisgarh.

She had a long and deep association with the Indira Kala Sangeet Vishwavidyalaya (IKSV) in Khairagarh town in Rajnandgaon district, its public relations officer said on Sunday.

She had viewed the university as a gurukul of art and music, PRO Vindo Dongre said.

Lata Mangeshkar visited the varsity on February 2, 1980. The varsity had awarded her an honorary degree of D Lit.

The Vice Chancellor of IKSV, eminent folk singer Padmashree Mamta Chandrakar, was a student of MA in classical music (vocal) in the university when Lata Mangeshkar visited it, he added.

During Mangeshkar’s visit, the VC was among the students who served the food to the guests.

The VC on Sunday expressed profound grief over her death and said: “Lataji has always been my ideal. Her demise is my personal and irreparable loss. The varsity expresses its humble tribute to the departed soul.”
