In spite of the fact that cleanliness is a major concern for all and despite the constant efforts of Ranchi Municipal Corporation (RMC) to modify the cleaning mechanism for clean and green Ranchi, the work of managing the task of solid waste management is appearing tough for the concerned firm, responsible for collecting the garbage from all the 55 wards.
According to the survey conducted recently by RMC in collaboration with Essel Infra, the firm is expected to cover 2.70 lakh households for keeping the city clean. However, lack of cooperation from the residents’ part at different wards is coming in the way, feels company.
“lack of civic sense and rigid attitude of people at different places often kills the time of laborers. On priority basis, we need to create awareness among these residents. We are trying to change the mindset of people but definitely, the process will take time. It is up to the concerned person how they want to see their residential areas. Since November 2016, we have taken up the charge of 13 wards in city. As of now on financial front there is no problem but managing people is a challenge,” said, AGM, Essel Infra, Arun Kumar Singh.
At present, the company’s work is restricted to only few wards (from ward number 1 to 13) yet hurdles like protest from residents, public response and concern towards the sanitation, willingness to properly dispose the waste materials etc. posses big constrains in smoothly carrying out the work in limited time.
looking at the present scenario and in an attempt to create awareness on solid waste disposal management especially about the segregation of waste procedure, Essel Infra group has planned to create ‘Safai Nigraani Committee’ (SNC) at each ward.
“After facing problems at different fronts, the company has planned to create SNCs at every ward to inculcate basic civic etiquettes among the residents. The committee will actively start functioning from January 2017 and will comprise five members of residential area, a company executive headed by the respective ward councilors,” Singh pointed out.
Notably, with 14 mini transfer stations lashed with 53 compacters, 13 hook loaders, 305 mini vehicles for door-to-door garbage collection, 22 green bins to collect bulk garbage at commercial areas and gated communities, the company is striving hard to give maximum facilities to the residents. Yet, land issues, public grievances often give a setback to complete all task in the set deadline at few localities.
On the other hand, street vendors are curse for the workers involved in keeping the city tidy as they do maximum litter along the roadside. “Despite giving them dustbins, the condition near the Morabadi Ground during the hushed hours is pathetic. Constant appeal to them has no effect, at this stage, we feel helpless,” added Singh.
However, the ward councilors believe that with the time, all things will fall in place. “Residents are not aware about the system at present. Slowly after observing, the work of Essel Infra things will run smoothly. They have to adjust with the new concept of door-to-door system,” said, Basanti lakra, a ward
councilor.
