A 40-year-old migrant labourer who was on his way to Jharkhand all the way from Maharashtra, mostly on foot, has died in Chhattisgarh's Bilaspur    district amid the          nationwide lockdown, police said on Wednesday.

Eight Jharkhand-bound labourers were admitted to the Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Sciences (CIMS) here on May 3 night, said Dr Aarti Pandey, its Public Relations Officer.

One of them, identified as Ravi Munda, who was suffering from dehydration and other illnesses, died during treatment on May 4 morning due to multi-organ failure, she said.

His swab sample was sent for a coronavirus test which came out negative on Tuesday. After getting      permission from his           relatives, his final rites were performed here by a local social organisation, she said.

The other seven   labourers were discharged after they recovered and were sent to Jharkhand in a bus with the help of the   district administration, she added.

Bilaspur Superintendent of Police Prashant Agrawal said    preliminary information showed that the labourers had left Nagpur in Maharashtra for their native places in Jharkhand on foot via Chhattisgarh during the ongoing coronavirus-enforced lockdown.

They possibly also took lift from goods vehicles to cover the distance of about 400 km till Bilaspur, he said.

After getting information about their condition, they were shifted to CIMS.
