Leader of the Opposition and BJP leader Dharamlal Kaushik, expressing dismay over the functioning of the state police, demanded a high-level probe into all custodial deaths that took place in Chhattisgarh after the Congress government came to power.
Speaking to the reporters at BJP divisional headquarters on Wednesday, he alleged that administration was trying to cover up the suspicious death of Harichand Maravi in Excise Control Room, Kawardha on Wednesday (July 24) under Chilphi police station limits.
He alleged that within six months of Congress government coming to power in the state around seven suspicious deaths have occurred in police and excise department custody.
“Home Minister has not given a single statement over these deaths,” he said listing out incidents of custodial deaths in Balrampur, Bilaspur, Surajpur, Panduka, Jashpur Nagar, Munegli, Korba and other places. In all these cases, a cover-up attempt was made by dubbing these deaths suicide, he said.
The BJP leader said the party had constituted two fact-finding teams to probe two such incidents where evidences pointed at foul play in police custody and suicidal deaths. He said government has so far not initiated stern action against “guilty” policemen even though the cases of custodial deaths are continuing, so a high-level probe is a must in all the cases.
