Karma's kin meet Prez, say insurgency getting national

Published on:

The family members of late leader of Opposition in the Chhattisgarh Assembly and Salwa Judum founder Mahendra Karma have cautioned President Pranab Mukherjee that Maoist insurgency is gradually boiling over to becoming a national problem.

The slain leader’s wife, son Deepak Karma and three daughters accompanied by Chhattisgarh Congress Working President Charandas Mahant met the President at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi on Sunday.

When called, Deepak Karma himself confirmed meeting the President alongwith his family members on Sunday.

Drawing Mukherjee’s attention towards the insurgency problem while providing detailed information on the May 25 massacre of key state-level Congress leaders in a swarming attack by Maoists at Jeeram Ghati of Bastar region, Deepak Karma said that the insurgency problem must end forever in the troubled regions.

The late Salwa Judum leader’s son was of the view that insurgency problem if left unchecked may create serious problems for the nation during the coming years.

The State Congress Working President  Dr Mahant later told Mukherjee that the Maoist attack at Jeeram Ghati took place on account of lack of sufficient security arrangements made for the convoy.

The meeting between Karma’s family and the President lasted more than an hour, sources informed.

It may be recalled that late Mahendra Karma who was revered as ‘Bastar Tiger’ for his tirade against the insurgents in Chhattisgarh was brutally gunned down and stabbed repeatedly by the Maoists at  Jeeram Ghati on May 25 during an attack on the Congress Convoy returning from a public meeting held at Sukma in restive Bastar region of Chhattisgarh.

Ever since Mahendra Karma’s killing, his family members had been repeatedly receiving death threats from Maoists.
