The Kandel Nahar Satyagraha of farmers in Chhattisgarh is one of the best examples of civil disobedience movement started by Mahatma Gandhi, Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel said on Sunday.
He was virtually addressing the centenary celebrations event organized by the Culture and Archaeology Department at Mahant Ghasidas Memorial Museum Complex here from his office-cum-residence.
December 20 marks first Raipur visit of Mahatma Gandhi. Baghel said the great men of Chhattisgarh have contributed significantly in each era, including the independence movement.
When the British fined the farmers of Kandel, they refused to pay up. The British then tried to sell the cattle of farmers by auction to recover the fine. On the call of the leaders of Kandel Satyagraha, people refused to buy the cattle, Baghel said.
He said on the request of Satyagraha leader Babu Chhote Lal Srivastava, Mahatma Gandhi arrived on December 20, 1920 in present day Chhattisgarh. On hearing about his arrival, the Raj withdrew the penalty, giving civil disobedience movement its first major victory.
He said Mahatma Gandhi had a major impact on the entire society. The Jungle Satyagraha by the tribals took inspiration from Gandhi. Youths gave up jobs to take a plunge in the freedom movement. Thousands went to jail.
Baghel said the Chhattisgarh government is pursuing Gandhiji's path. He also threw light on the steps taken to increase the income of farmers, workers and villagers in the state.
