Joint effort required to conserve water: Expert

Besides the government, water conservation and ground water repletion (recharge) are the responsibility of society as well. We must have to think jointly and seriously over it. Schools need to give knowledge of water conservation to their students from very early stage, said T Chakravarty, scientist of Central Ground Water Board. He was speaking on the issue of ‘Water administration and management’ in a workshop organised by Chhattisgarh State Biodiversity Board marking the World Biodiversity Day on Wednesday.

Presenting his views on the importance of water management through photographs Chakravarty said red coloured water is running in our veins, while plants have water of green colour and rivers ponds exhibits blue coloured water, means water has its presence everywhere but even after enormous efforts of governments it is still scarce as village and forest dwellers have to put in much labour in getting just a bucket of water, he added.

Notably, United Nations Organisation has this year declared the ‘water and biodiversity conservation’ as the motto of World Biodiversity Day and on this occasion Chhattisgarh State Biodiversity Board first time organised a day-long workshop on the issue in which a number of experts expressed their views.

Chief engineer of Public Health and Engineering department of undivided Madhya Pradesh Kailash Chand Dixit speaking on the subject of ‘Effective steps for Water conservation’ said that construction of ponds and wells in villages according to the Indian tradition was perhaps the best example of water conservation. He also advocated for making permanent holes on the sides of concrete roads for allowing water to enter the soil to recharge the ground water as these roads are presently not allowing rain water to enter the ground, main reason for depletion of ground water table.

Wildlife expert Rajendra Mishra shed the light on the growing conflicts between wildlife animals and the human beings. Other participants also exchanged their views in an open house discussion in which besides Diwakar Mishra, R K Tamta, O P Yadav, Anup Shrivastava, about 150 representatives of NGOs and Forest department officials participated.
