Institutional delivery in Naxalite region

In what could be seen as a sign of restoring health services in Maoist violence-hit region of Chhattisgarh, a woman gave birth to a baby boy at a sub-health centre in Jinelanka village in Bijapur district.

“It is for the first time a baby was born in the Golapalli centre. Both the mother and child are safe. With the Health department's efforts, the centre was reactivated after being shut for several years,” a press release said.

Nagmani Madvi (23) of Jinelanka village, about four km from the Golapalli centre, became a mother under the supervision of trained medical staff, added the press release.

Golapalli is about 500 km south of Raipur.

This is the second son born to Nagmani. About four years back, she gave birth to a son at her home in the village.

“This time I was not in much stress as I knew I was under the proper care of trained health workers. I received the doctor’s supervision which was quite relieving for my family,” Nagmani was quoted as saying in the press release.

Her husband Lakhan Madvi also expressed happiness on re-starting of the health centre.

"The female health workers provided us with pre-childbirth care and advice regarding diet which we followed," he said in the press release.

The centre will also provide vaccination for the new born.
