Inmates of Central Jail Raipur angry with checking and seizure of contraband materials from the jail on Thursday by officials tried to create a ruckus in the jail premises on Friday morning.

“We had to use light force for controlling the inmates”, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Prison and Correctional Services Dr KK Gupta who is currently having the charge of Superintendent of Central Jail Raipur said.  “Various convicts who are currently serving their sentences in Central jail Raipur on Friday early morning tried to create pressure by adopting aggressive stand and quarreling with the guards,” he informed.

Notably, on Thursday, a joint team of district administration and police had carried out a sudden inspection of the Central Jail Raipur wherein sharp edged weapons, opium and other contraband materials were found in jail barracks. Jail Superintendent Rajesh Gaikwad was later on suspended.

“The jail inmates were trying to create an environment like on October 2 after which they had started agitation to create pressure on jail authorities. So according to the jail manual, we had to use light force for controlling the inmates,” DIG Jail said.

He further informed that criminal cases under relevant Sections were registered against 67 convicts. They were also transferred to other jails of the State.
