Include Sanskrit as compulsorily subject in CBSE Classes 9, 10: Verma

Rajya Sabha member from the state Chhaya Verma on Thursday demanded that the Union HRD minister make Sanskrit as a compulsory subject in the syllabus for Classes 9 and 10 in schools under the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) board.

Verma, in a letter to the Union minister for human resource development, objected to the recent order of the CBSE board to remove Sanskrit as a compulsory subject in Classes 9 and 10.

“It was because of Sanskrit language, India was a ‘Vishwaguru’ in the past and the dual policy of the Centre will force the people to suffer a lot,” she said.

Before the order, there were five compulsory and one additional subject and students could opt for English, Hindi, Mathematics, Science and Social Science with Sanskrit as an additional subject, Rajya Sabha member said.

There was an option of taking another subject rather than Sanskrit but from now onwards they have to take skill subjects, she said.

The MP demanded that the union minister amend the new provision and make Sanskrit a compulsory subject in the school syllabus.
