The Chhattisgarh unit of Indian Medical Association (IMA) received no assurance from the Chief Minister Raman Singh regarding release of the doctors accused in botched sterilisation camp deaths.

A delegation of IMA met Chief Minister Raman Singh on Sunday morning and discussed about the alleged unjutified arrest of Dr RK Gupta. “The Chief Minister did not give any assurance to us but we hope that Dr Gupta will be granted bail in the light of the guidelines of the Supreme Court,’ said IMA State President Dr Ashok Tripathi.

Dr Tripathi said that the doctors of the entire State are against the arrest of Dr RK Gupta who has been sent to jail without inquiry being completed into the incident. After meeting the Chief Minister, the IMA held a meeting in Raipur which was attended by doctors from all parts of the State.

“We have observed a strike on Saturday and will wait for a day till Monday anticipating bail to be granted to the doctors from the court. If not, we will again hold a meeting “ said Dr Tripathi.

The doctors said that the primary revelations about presence of Rat poison in the medicines given to the patients in the sterilization camp vindicate their stand. Dr Gupta should be released in the light of the revelations, they said. The delegation included Dr Ashok Tripathi, Dr Anil Karnawat, IMA Bilaspur Unit President Dr lC Madheria, Dr KR Sonwani, Dr Anurag and others.

It may be recalled that laparoscopic surgeon Dr RK Gupta and Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr RK Bhange were dismissed from service by the State government after death of 13 women operated in sterlization camp held at Bilaspur district on November 8 and 10.

FIR was also lodged against Dr Gupta who was later arrested from Baloda Bazar. Dr Gupta has claimed that the he was not at fault and the death had occurred due to medicines.
