Heavy rains clog capital city

Published on:

Heavy rains paralysed life in the Chhattisgarh capital on Saturday amid widespread waterlogging and snapping of power supply in most areas as the downpour continued for around two hours.

The electricity department had to deploy dozens of linesmen to restore power supply including in residential areas where VIPs reside.

Water logging was reported at Jaistambh Chowk, Rajendra Nagar, Janata Colony (Gudhiyari), Ring Road, Agrasen Chowk, Gayatri Nagar and Telibandha area.

At the Lal Ganga Shopping Mall, water entered the shops causing losses to many traders. Water logging was reported in low lying areas of the capital, inundating houses.

The Meteorological Centre said pressure from the Northeast Arabian Sea and low pressure over east-central and adjoining Bay of Bengal will lead to thunderstorm and lightining in Chhattisgarh and neighbouring states.

Heavy rains have been forecast in south and central parts of Chhattisgarh over the next two days. Raipur will see spells of rain or thundershowers and the maximum temperature will remain around 29 degrees Centigrade.

Meteorological Centre scientist H.P. Chandra said the monsoon situation is still prevailing in September due to continuous low pressures.

Raipur recorded a rainfall of 3.5 mm on Saturday.
