The Chhattisgarh High Court on Monday permitted private schools to collect the tuition fee from students, quashing a government order that barred schools from charging fees while directing them to pay salaries to their staff.
“The Bilaspur Private School Management Association Society had challenged the order of Director Public Instructions in the High Court which had asked private schools not to charge fees from students. Also, the order had said not to cut salaries of the teaching and non-teaching staff,” Advocate Ashish Shrivastava, who represented the association, told The Pioneer over telephone.
The association said its members were getting no support from the state government and fees was the only source of their income, the advocate said.
Justice P. Sam Koshy in Bilaspur quashed the government order and allowed the schools to collect but only the tuition fee, Shrivastava added.
The court also directed educational institutions not to enhance or revise their tuition fees until the situation normalizes.
The court told the educational institutions to develop a mechanism to ensure that online education facilities reaches every student.
If a candidate is not in a position to access the online education facility, the institutions should evolve a system of providing such study materials to the student so that his studies are not interrupted, the order said.
