Govt hospital staff to learn Disaster Management

The staff of district hospitals across Chhattisgarh will soon be trained on tackling disaster situations.

As of now, the State Health Resource Centre (SHRC) officials have completed the study regarding this skill based training and waiting for the sanctioning of funds.

“It is a new initiative for the State wherein all the ranks in the 27 district hospitals and two medical colleges will be trained on handling emergencies during natural disasters like flood since we cannot be sure that such calamities can never occur in Chhattisgarh,” said Fidius Kerketta, Senior Programme Coordinator (TA), State Health Resource Centre of Chhattisgarh.

The lower rank staff will be deployed in particular for emergency tasks as they are the ones who can be approached easily in such situations, he said.

“Initially, we covered 18 districts for the study of the training but on the directives of State Health Director R Prasanna the study was extended to all the 27 districts and completed in January, Kerketta said.

Once the staff is trained, we will monitor their performance through a post-training session. Each of these institutions will have to set up a Disaster Management Committee involving their own employees for managing the training,” he said. The training will entirely be a field work aimed to make the medical staff familiar with the conditions during disasters, Kerketta said.

To make a demonstration of this training, the Resource Centre conducted a session at the Raipur District Hospital in March end. “There is a need to follow up such trainings. It is not possible unless we have sufficient funds,” said an official source.

Meanwhile, Kerketta said the programme will begin from High Priority Hospitals namely the District Hospitals at Durg, Rajnandgaon, Bilaspur and Ambikapur in the first phase.

later, the two medical colleges including Chhattisgarh Institute of Medical Sciences (CIMS) Bilaspur and Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar Memorial Hospital Raipur followed by the District Hospital at Bijapur.
