Godavari flood cuts Bastar's link with Andhra

Due to the flash flood in Godavari River, flowing in Andhra Pradesh neighbouring Chhattisgarh’ s Bastar division, its tributary Shabri River is also in spate posing the danger of submergence to Konta.

The level of water in the Sabri River crossed danger mark even as at least 8 villages around it were inundated with district administration asking people to vacate low lying areas and shift to safer places.

Due to reverse water of Godavari, Sabri River swelled alarmingly as flood water flowed 15 feet above over the bridge on it near Konta. Due to this, not only Konta, the southernmost tehsil of State turned in to an Island and road link with the neighbouring State was also cut.

Overflow in Godavari river have filled dams to their brim in neighbouring Odisha and any time water could be released from them which ultimately will create problem in Bastar, specially in Sukma district.

Notably, due to high velocity thunderstorm which lashed Kirandul area Friday, more than 50 huts caved in while supply of power and water remained disrupted for the second day on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Congress criticised the lacklustre attitude of Government towards the flood hit. In a statement Congress spokesman Mahendra Chhawada said that due to excessive rains normal life of people have been affected in many areas but the Government and its disaster management are sleeping as if they have no concern for the flood hit people. Due to flood and heavy rains large scale damage have been reported from Rajnandgaon, Chhuikhadan, Gariaband, Kanker, Bastar, and other areas, he said and demanded that the Government should conduct survey of the damages at war level and provide relief to the people from Disaster Relief Fund at the earliest.
