'Goal of education is to eliminate inequality'

The basic goal of education should be to get rid of inequality and injustice in the society and also to develop humanism among the people so that a just social order could be established, said Dileep Ranjekar, renowned educationist and Co-CEO of Azim Premji Foundation.

He was delivering a special lecture on ‘Education in India’ organised at Kushabhau Thakre University of Journalism and Mass Communication here on Wednesday. Ranjekar remarked: ‘The National Policy of Education- that was implemented in mid eighties- spelled out three goals of education namely-- cognitive development, development of human empathy and skill development.

However, he added, “our courses have not been able to realize any of these goals nor the political and administrative dispensation has given a thought on these aspects.”Mentioning that there has been very less or no investment on teachers training in the country,  Ranjekar said the country urgently needs trained teachers who could handle the pedagogical aspects of education and impart teaching that would help the students understand issues and help in knowledge society building.

Speaking on the occasion, Vice-Chancellor of Kushabhau Thakre University of Journalism and Mass Communication  Dr Sachchidanand Joshi quoted Swami Vivekananda and said that the education is the manifestation of the perfection already inside the man. Senior journalist lalit Surjan, who was the chief guest said social status of teachers and teaching profession has gone down significantly in post colonial India.

He said: ‘Whereas the developed countries have ensured a vibrant education sector for their citizens, developing nations like India face a paradoxical international environment where on the one hand MDG goals of UN focuses on education; the World Bank aid carries a categorical rider that the nations availing the aid have to retreat from welfare activities such as education and health.
