liquor shops located on main roads of all cities and towns of Chhattisgarh would soon be asked to shift on the outskirts. Expressing serious concern over drunken driving, Chief Secretary Vivek Dhand on Tuesday asked both senior police officials and those of the Transport Department to also get the liquor shops located along the State’s highways shifted elsewhere.
This apart, Dhand, also directed to relocate dairies situated in the middle of cities and towns and also get dangerous hoardings on road sides removed. Moreover, the Chief Secretary directed both the Police and Transport departments to take strict action against rash and drunken drivers. The meeting was held for adopting Road Safety measures for citizens of the State.
Dhand asked the officials of Police, Transport, Health, School Education, Public Works Department (PWD), Prohibition and Urban Administration departments to work for creating a ‘Work Plan’ with mutual co-ordination for ensuring public safety. Notably, a Committee has been constituted under the Chairmanship of former Supreme Court of India Chief Justice, Justice SK Radhakrishnan for ensuring Road Safety.
This Committee monitors implementation of various rules and laws formulated by Union and State Governments for Road Safety. As per the directives of the Committee, Secretary of Transport Department presents a report every three months before it while detailing about various measures adopted by the respective State Government on Road Safety measures taken.
Officials informed that shortly, a circular would be issued for the district collectors for removing liquor shops on road sides in Chhattisgarh. The Police Department will inform Transport Department about drunken driving incidents so that driving licenses of such persons could be cancelled.
