The authorities have decided to conduct a departmental probe into the botched eye camp held in Mahasamund district in which some patients allegedly had lost their vision in 2012.

The latest move comes after a preliminary investigation pointed towards several irregularities committed in the conduct of the surgery. The probe would be conducted on 22 points and the concerned department has already asked the State Government for necessary direction. Several doctors and the officials engaged in the camp are likely to be questioned during the investigation, sources said.

The camp was organised by a social organisation Shree Krishna Agrawal Memorial Trust at the Community Health Centre at Bagbahra, about 100 kms from Raipur. In the camp, 145 persons had undergone the Cataract operation from Dec 8 to 12 in 2012. Of them, 15 patients had allegedly developed infection in their eyes within a few days. Nine of them were shifted to MGM eye hospital at Raipur after their condition deteriorated.

Senior health official and eye expert Dr Subhash Mishra had investigated the matter and submitted a report to the Government. On the basis of his report, the Government has decided to conduct an administrative enquiry and it has planned to take strong take action against those who would be found guilty. The investigators will find out the details of the  training provided to doctors and employees before the eye camp. They will also find out the number of doctors present in the camp and why some doctors came later after the call.

The health department has already written to the chief medical officer of the district twice and obtained the detailed information.
