Food items sold in open to come under scanner

Food items being sold in the open in hotels, dhabas and roadside carts would now come under scrutiny to check their quality in Raipur and Durg divisions. The officials of civic bodies would collect and check food samples while asking to destroy food which are found unfit for consumption.

Raipur and Durg Division Commissioner Ashok Agrawal issued the directives to the district collectors of the two divisions here. He said that the campaign by the civic bodies must commence before the start of the monsoons.

Notably, in March this year, the Food and Drug Administration Department had even started a drive against persons operating their business without a license or registration.

Officials here informed that the Section 3 of Food Safety and Standard Act 2006 covers businesses like Rice Mill, Pulse Mill, Poha Mill, Murmura mill and grinding units of pulses and food  materials.

The Act governs the production, storage, distribution and sales of products manufactured under these kinds of business. It also includes alcohol producers and transporters of food materials.

The traders in this business have to take license or get registered with State Government under the Section 26.2(3) of the aforementioned Act.

Individuals violating the norms can face imprisonment upto 6 months and fine up to Rs5 lakhs.
