Five Maoists, four of them carrying cash rewards between Rs 1 lakh and Rs 8 lakh on their heads surrendered in Chhattisgarh's restive Bijapur district of Bastar on Friday, police said.

The ultras, including a woman, gave themselves up before senior police officials at the Bijapur district headquarters.

The rebels cited "disappointment" with the Maoist way of life and their "hollow" ideology for disassociating themselves from the armed movement and joining the national mainstream, according to Bijapur Superintendent of Police (SP) K l Dhruv.

Those surrendered were identified as Shanti alias Rambati Modiam (25), Raju Vacham (25), Munna Veladi (28), Somaru Mandavi (25) and Manoj Bhogami (22), he said.

Of them, Shanti was active as a member of a ‘military company’ of the outlawed CPI (Maoist) in Mad area of the district, Dhruv said, adding she was carrying a reward of Rs 8 lakh on her head.

Vacham, a member of a local organisation squad, and Veladi (28), a Deputy Commander, were carrying cash rewards of Rs 3 lakh and Rs 2 lakh, respectively, on their heads, he added.

likewise, Mandavi (25), an active lGS (local guerrilla squad) member, was carrying a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his head, the SP said.

Dhruv said Rs 10,000 in cash was given to each of the surrendered rebels as encouragement money. They will be rehabilitated as per the State Government policy.
