Tension prevailed in the city following a bandh called by right wing activists of Akhil Bharatiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Bajrang Dal on Thursday over alleged derogatory comment posted by a youth on Hindu Goddesses on the social networking site facebook.
The bandh supported by Durg residents was marked by sporadic violence during the day. However, police bandobast made as part of a tight security measure prevented any untoward incident. The situation is under control. The District Collector had imposed Section 144 considering the sensitiveness of the situation, Inspector General of Police Durg Pradeep Gupta told The Pioneer over phone.
At some places, police had to resort to light cane-charge for dispersing the bandh supporters, he said. In some parts of the city such as Green Chowk and Indira Market, some bandh supporters ransacked few shops and also reached the Engineering College premises for forcing the bandh there. The petrol pump and hotels also remained closed during the day.
"The accused has been arrested against whom a case under Section 66 (A) of Information Technology Act along with other relevant sections of Indian Penal Code (IPC) has been imposed. He was presented in a local court from where was sent to jail," the IG said. Meanwhile, the classes which were being held in various colleges in Bhilai city were also suspended hours following the bandh call given by ABVP, Hindu Yuva Manch, and Bajrang Dal activists.
