After liquor vends reopened after a long closure due to Covid-19 lockdown, a fruit vendor from Raipur's New Rajendra Nagar area couldn’t resist himself from drinking excessively, leading to his death on Wednesday.

Sanjay Pundhir, the Station House Officer of Rajendra Nagar police station, identified the man was Jiwan Lal Nagwani, 45.

The deceased sold fruits in Rajendra Nagar. When the ban on sale of liquor was lifted on Monday, he started consuming liquor after a gap of more than 40 days.

He didn’t wake up after going to sleep on Tuesday night. The family rushed him to a nearby hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.

The distraught family members have asked the government to again close down liquor shops. They said they have lost a family member and didn’t want any other family to suffer a   similar fate.
