Former CBI judge Prabhakar Gwal on Sunday demanded a fresh probe into the 2012 suicide by Bilaspur Superintendent of Police Rahul Sharma, alleging a link between that death and the now suspended IPS officer Gurjinder Pal Singh.
Gwal said that Singh, who was the Chhattisgarh Additional Director General of Police when he was suspended, hid critical evidence during the probe into the suicide by Sharma, a 2002 Indian Police Service (IPS) officer.
Singh has now been charged with corruption. A sedition case has also been slapped against him.
Gwal told the media here that a judicial committee should investigate the suicide while a fresh petition should be filed by social workers and advocates in the Chhattisgarh High Court.
He alleged that Sharma committed suicide due to pressure from Singh and the coal mafia.
Gwal said: "I was involved in the suicide investigation where the police did not record the statements of the people present on the spot at the time of the incident. Sharma's laptop and pen drive were missing."
In November 2020, the Chhattisgarh government set up a five-member committee to probe Sharma's suicide.
Sharma (37) shot himself dead with his revolver in the officer mess in Bilaspur in March 2012.
In a suicide note, he blamed his senior officer and a High Court judge for his suicide.
The erstwhile BJP government recommended for the CBI probe in this regard but this was not ordered.
