Former Union Minister Charan Das Mahant has held the entire State administration responsible for the death of the farmer in Korba district. He was addressing a press conference with leader of Congress legislative Party (ClP) TS Singhdeo at party’s State headquarters Congress Bhawan here.According to Mahant, the crop cultivated by farmer Jageswar Singh over 9 acres of his land was damaged by wild elephants in November 2014.
“He could not get loan from bank or money from other sources for using it for agriculture purposes. The compensation given by the Forest Department was also not provided to Jageswar. The eight months delay forced him to take his won life,” Mahant told reporters.Mahant claimed that there are several farmers in Korba who have have not received compensation for damage caused by wild elephants from 2013 onwards and there is widespread anger against the State Government.
He recalled that the Central government had notified the elephant corridor in Chhattisgarh for managing elephants but the State government had done nothing in that direction.
