A 47-year-old man was killed in an elephant attack in Chhattisgarh's Gaurela-Pendra-Marwahi district, a forest official said on Sunday.
Four people have been killed so far in similar attacks in the district bordering Madhya Pradesh since March this year, he added.
The latest incident took place in Beljhariya village in the Katra forest range when Ramdhan Gond returned home with his wife after work on Saturday evening, Marwahi Divisional Forest Officer Dinesh Patel said.
Gond started screaming after he spotted the elephant in the backyard of his house.
The elephant lifted the man with its trunk, flung him to the ground and trampled him, killing him. His wife managed to escape.
The distraught family was given an instant relief of Rs 25,000, the official said.
A herd of three elephants had entered the Marwahi forest area from the neighbouring Anuppur forest division in Madhya Pradesh and the elephant that attacked Gond belonged to the same herd, the officer said.
