nA female elephant was found dead in Jashpur district of Chhattisgarh on Wednesday.

The carcass was found in the Kunkuri forest circle, a press release said.

“Wild elephants were roaming in the Kunkuri Forest circle area situated close to village Ambatoli for the last fortnight. A group of 15 wild tuskers had destroyed crops of some farmers,” Sub Divisional Forest Officer (SDO) Abhishek Jogawat said in the press release.

A forest guard who had gone to make an estimation of the crops destroyed by wild tuskers found the corpse of the elephant in the forest. The body appeared to be a few days old, Jogawat said.

Prima facie the injury marks appeared deep in the body which could be the result of infighting among the wild elephants, he said, while expressing the possibility that the elephant might have skidded from the slippery rock near the ridge nearby, leading to her death.

However, the actual      reason of death can be    ascertained after a postmortem, he said.

In the recent months, there has been an increase in the deaths of wild elephants due to electrocution and other reasons.

In the last four months, 11 elephants have died in separate districts of the state.
