Don't blame me for making 'adult' movies: Bhatt

Ace Bollywood Director, Writer and Producer, Mahesh Bhatt defended himself from the allegations of promoting sex in his movies saying that films with adult themes are what audiences want to watch.

“Why blame me when it is what people want to see as they buy tickets to watch my films” said the creative genius here on Monday.

The Director of many award-winning movies including Arth, Saaransh, lahu Ke Do Rang, Daddy and Aashiqui, Bhatt confessed of not making any ‘meaningful movie’ after ‘Jakhm’ as such movies are not commercially successful.

“I recently produced a movie ‘City lights’, which won rave reviews from most critics but was not commercially successful. The movie’s lifetime earning was somewhere to the first day box office collection of ‘Jism 2’ he said, adding that the budget of ‘Jism 2’ was Rs7 Crore while its box office collection was about Rs35 crore.

“I am not mad of making the movies, which people rarely go to watch,” said the filmmaker, who is well known for his adult themed films including Murder 2, Murder 3, Raaz 3D, Jannat 2 and Jism 2.

Bhatt was in the city to promote Colors channel’s upcoming show ‘Udann’, which marks the journey of 7-years-old Chakor aka Spandan Chaturvedi as she rises like phoenix towards her dreams to showcase a mind without fear.

Speaking about the concept of Udann, Bhatt said “Nothing communicates better than the truth. Through Udann, we hope to create an advocacy for the liberation of women as they fight against injustice”.

He added that Chakor is a young girl, who wants to fly even though she has been mortgaged while she was in her mother’s womb. She finds herself pitted against the entire world as she stands tall against a practice which cripples human aspirants.

While recalling his journey of making first Hindi TV serial ‘Swabhimaan’ in 1995, Bhatt said that Indian television industry has expanded on a large scale.

“As far as entertainment is concerned, television industry has acquired first place followed by media and film industry,” claimed the 65-years-old filmmaker.

With him, the producers of Udaan, Dhaval Jayantilal Gada and Guroudev Bhalla along with Suhasini Mulay, who dons the role of Shakuntala Singh and Rajiv Kumar, who essays the role Chakor’s father, Bhuvan visited the city.

The show was written by the award-winning writers Robin Bhatt and Javed Siddiqui. The show started from Monday and would air every Monday to Saturday at 8.30pm.

Though Udann is believed to face tough competition as it will air on the same time of the megastar, Amitabh Bachchan’s show Kaun Banega Crorepati – 8, which is slated to telecast on another channel, Bhalla showed confidence of getting good response from the audiences.

“Udann is a fiction show and is based on ‘bonded labour’. A lot of research has gone into ensuring that the story is told in the right spirit and we have worked closely with NGOs fighting on the issue to ensure realistic representation,” said Bhalla.

Beautifully conceptualised by Mahesh Bhatt, the show celebrates the aspirational journey of Chakor as she takes life in her stride. Udann is a true labour of love and people will watch it, Bhalla added.
