Experts in the All India Institute of Medical Sciences here stressed on Tuesday that patients should not ignore early warning symptoms of brain tumor and take expert opinion without delay. If detected earlier, it is curable, they said.
The symposium of tumor was organized by the Department of Neurosurgery to discuss new medical advances in the field.
Expressing concern, the expert said that brain tumour patients have become a challenge for the medical fraternity as their number was increasing yearly.
An official communication said that during the symposium, vital aspects of treatment protocols were discussed.
Prof. (Dr.) Nitin M. Nagarkar, Director, AIIMS-R, said that brain tumor surgery needed a collaborative approach to cure the tumor completely.
As AIIMS-R provides state-of-the-art facilities to brain tumor patients, there has been an increased influx of severe patients over the last few years, he said.
Now, experts and researchers should focus on research and treatment, he said.
According to Dr. Anil Kumar Sharma, HoD, Department of Neurosurgery, early symptoms of brain tumor include severe headache, seizures, unexplained nausea or vomiting, vision problems, gradual loss of sensation or movement in an arm or leg, difficulties with balance, tiredness, confusion or difficulty in decision making or similar behavioural changes besides hearing problems as well as difficulty in speech.
Dr. Sharma suggested an early diagnosis of such symptoms; ignoring them can become life-threatening for the patient.
The symposium witnessed around 100 specialists including a presentation by Prof. Narendra Kuber Bodhey, Dr. Siddhartha Nanda, Dr. Mudalsha Ravina, Dr. Yashwant Kashyap, Dr. Rashmi Dubey and Dr. Charandeep Singh Gandhoke.
