Doctors in Chhattisgarh’s Dantewada District Hospital and its Special Newborn Care Unit (SNCU) staff ensured a new lease of life to a newborn who did not appear to have heartbeat upon delivery. The baby boy was discharged on Wednesday.

Laxmi Kashyap, a police constable resident of Haram village near Geedam in Dantewada district, had a normal delivery on July 19. But the child did not show the vital signs of respiration and heartbeat.

The infant was             immediately shifted to SNCU, where doctors and staff conducted all              procedures including        providing oxygen, lifesaving         injections and chest compressions to revive the boy.

Their efforts paid off in 30 minutes as the child's heart started to beat, an         official statement said.

Dr. Rajesh Dhruv,          in-charge of SNCU, and Dr. Ankita said it was tough to save the baby with no signs of vital functions of heart and lungs.

But the joint efforts paid off.

The infant was kept for 11 days for further examination and treatment. The child was discharged after it started breast-feeding, with both heart-beats and respirations getting normal.

The parents, Lakshmi Kashyap and Dayanand Kumar, expressed their           gratitude to the doctors and nursing staff for reviving the newborn.

Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel tweeted the incredible saga: “This is a true story where Dantewada district hospital doctors brought a newborn baby from the mouth of death. Such               incidents show that our healthcare is the best. Congratulations to all the doctors.”
