Doctors at the Pt Jawaharlal Nehru Memorial Medical College here removed a rare inverted papilloma of frontal sinus with skull base extension endoscopically without external incision.

The surgery helped to avert the loss of vision in a 75-year-old patient from Dongargarh, who the doctors did not want to operate due to old age.

The feat was performed by a joint team of doctors from the Ear, Nose, Throat (ENT) and Neurosurgery departments.

Dr. Manya Thakur Roy of ENT department said the assistance of neurosurgeon Dr. Debabrata Sahana and his team was taken due to intracranial complications.

She said the patient had a breathing problem with nasal mass for two years and hyposmia with continuous headache for six months, both affecting his vision.

In this case, the tumor was removed without any external incision in the face.

It is very rare that inverted papilloma involves both skull base and orbit.

Dr Manya said that inverted papilloma is a benign tumor that slowly invades and destroys the normal surrounding structure like malignant tumor. It is commonly found in maxillary sinus and rarely involves other sinuses. But in this case, it arose from the frontal sinus with both orbital and intracranial extension.
