A discussion on topic ‘Scenario of Renewable Energy in Chhattisgarh’ was hosted by Oxfam India in the city on Tuesday.
Representatives of organizations working on the issue of livelihood in tribal-dominated areas of the State, community leaders, social workers, researchers and experts expressed their views during the programme.
Renewable energy contributes 13 per cent of total power generation but it still does not meet the electricity demand in villages and communities, said a Social Researcher from Delhi Suparno lahiri, adding that electricity produced from Solar Energy is higher in price and its rate could be brought down by using equipment manufactured within the country.
Taking the discussion ahead, Programme Officer of Oxfam India Vijendra Aznabi said that renewable energy in this changing scenario is one of the important issues for the organization to be discussed.
Although, Chhattisgarh Renewable Energy Development Agency (CREDA) as well as various social organizations are working across the country in this direction from past several years but people still have less knowledge about use of renewable energy.
To develop better understanding on the issue, frequent discussion on the topic is necessary, added Aznabi.
In its global sustainable goals, the United Nations has listed enhancement of solar energy as seventh goal but in the State like Chhattisgarh a large number of people still depend on wood for undertaking cooking task, pointed out Anand Shukla, Regional Manager of Oxfam India and further elaborated that spreading information about renewable energy among the people is one of the biggest
challenges.
Switching to renewable energy is going to be the only option left before humans because available natural resources are rapidly exhausting, he said.
