The upgradation of Dhamtari municipality into a Municipal Corporation as announced by Chief Minister Raman Singh during the Independence day celebrations in Raipur had been welcomed by the people here.

Dhamtari is one of the oldest municipality. During the last 133 years of its journey,  the municipality has in its credit several developmental works completed in the city.

However, with the rise in the population of the city, the need of a Municipal Corporation was felt to speed up the works as the budgetary allocation used to be meagre for the Municipality. The Chief Minister has fulfilled the long standing demand of the people, a local resident said.

Chief Minister Raman Singh during his visit to Dhamtari two-and-half months ago to unveil the statue of  Chhattrapati Shivaji Maharaj had promised that the Municipality will be upgraded into a Municipal Corporation before his next visit to the area.

BJP city general secretary Kavindra Jain said the developmental activities will intensify further after formal upgradation of the Municipality into a Municipal Corporation. It is a matter of joy for the people of Dhamtari, he said.

Pramod Gupta, a businessman said that although the status of Municipal  Corporation was supposed to be accorded much before, it was put under carpet due to politics.

BJP youth wing district president Chetan Hinduja said that the Municipal Corporation has been given more power than the Municipality. The Corporation will now have more budget allocation and more number of employees, he said.
