DGP submits proposal to help out 6,000 former SPOs

Chhattisgarh Director General of Police Ashok Juneja has submitted a proposal for promoting Assistant Constables and hiking their salary and allowances equivalent to the post of Constables.

The police chief submitted the proposal to the state government, an official communication said on Sunday.

Around 6,000 local youths of Bastar division were recruited as ‘Special Police Officers’ after police training to counter Naxalites in the state. This was struck down by the Supreme Court.

The BJP government then recruited them as Assistant Constables with a consolidated pay after relaxing the recruitment rules. They have been part of the District Reserve Guard and posted with district force and at police stations, including for intelligence gathering.

Their agitation first began in June 2018 when the personnel and family members staged protests across the state just ahead of Assembly elections. The Congress promised to fulfill some of the demands.

They again staged a protest on December 6, 2021.

The Chief Minister then asked Juneja to submit a detailed proposal to the government.
