Department inquiry into Bagbahra botched eye surgery yet to begin

The departmental probe into the botched eye surgery held in a camp in Mahasamund district in year 2012, in which some patients had lost their eye sight, has not started yet due to non-availability of official documents.

The camp was organised by a social organisation Shree Krishna Agrawal Memorial Trust at the Community Health Centre at Bagbahra, about 100 kms from Raipur. In the camp, 145 persons had undergone the cataract operation from December 8 to 12 in 2012.

Of them 15 patients had allegedly developed serious infection in their eyes within few days of their operation. Nine of them were shifted to MGM Eye Hospital in Raipur after their condition deteriorated. Senior health official and eye expert Dr Subhash Mishra had investigated the matter and submitted a report to the Government.

On the basis of his report, the government had announced to take strong action against those who would be found guilty after deciding to conduct the departmental inquiry. The departmental inquiry would be conducted on 22 points. The health department had directed the Chief medical officer at Mahasamund, the concerned eye surgeon, and organiser of the camp to submit the relevant documents.
