Demand for separate ‘Chhattisgarhi’ channel raised

Chhattisgarh’s Rajya Sabha member Phulo Devi Netam on Wednesday sought a separate channel for ‘Chhattisgarhi’ in Doordarshan.

Making a special mention in the upper house, Phulo Devi (Congress) said Chhattisgarh has completed 20 years of existence as a state. But no concrete steps have been taken for promoting and developing Chhattisgarhi language, said a press statement.

Different states have separate channels in Doordarshan based on the local languages. But in Chhattisgarh, Doordarshan is not operating any such channel where programmes are transmitted only in Chhattisgarhi.

But private regional channels are running programmes in Chhattisgarhi, she pointed out.

She said the state needs such a channel where art, culture and heritage related programmes are shown and the interests of local artists are protected. The state-based Doordarshan is capable of running such a channel.
