Chhattisgarh, which has been reeling under heat-wave like conditions for the past few days got relief on Thursday as approaching cyclone ‘Fani’ changed the state’s weather.
Though there was partial effect of the cyclone in the state, rainfall with thunderstorms was witnessed at the southern part of Chhattisgarh while the capital city too saw an overcast sky and sudden decrease in temperature.
Meteorological Scientist of Raipur centre of Indian Meteorological Centre R.K. Vaishya informed The Pioneer that the partial effect of the cyclone would bring thunderstorm or dust storm in areas bordering Odisha. The effect of it would also be there in plain areas of Raipur, Durg and Bilaspur divisions.
Specially, the southern part of Chhattisgarh was affected by the cyclone where rainfall with thunderstorms was reported, he said. The strong wind of 30-40 kmph would be observed here, he added.
“The severe cyclonic storm, which is moving north-northeastwards and located around 830 km off Puri in Odisha, is likely to make a landfall in Odisha coast near Puri on May 3 in the evening, with an expected speed of around 180 kmph”, weather officials said. “Thus the effect of the cyclone in Chhattisgarh state will remain for the next couple of days and the people here will get some respite from scorching heat”, he added. “Chhattisgarh started feeling its impact from Thursday with cyclonic cloud hovering across the state dropping temperature. The weather condition will remain so till May 5”, the official said.
“Chhattisgarh is expected to experience the cyclonic cloud. Even as light to moderate rainfall is likely in areas bordering Odisha on May 3, southern parts of the state such as Bastar and Dantewada districts might experience one or two spells of heavy rains,” Vaishya said.
“The cyclone will bring down the maximum temperature till May 4. Thereafter, it will start increasing, as normal weather will return to the state,” he added.
