A city superintendent of police (CSP) posted in Bastar region’s headquarters Jagdalpur town went on a shooting spree on Tuesday at his official residence and shot at his wife, son and daughter and then killed himself.
The police officer, Devnarayan Patel, opened indiscriminate firing on his two children and wife just a day after he was suspended on charges of physically assaulting an additional district judge (ADJ) who was reportedly in inebriated condition.
The 40-year-old Patel pumped bullets into his wife Pratima, daughter Poonam (11 yr) and son Aryan (6 yr) from his service revolver at around 2 a.m. on Tuesday here. Police have sealed off Jagdalpur’s Saket Colony residence of Patel who originally belonged to Bilaspur in Chhattisgarh. State government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident.
The repeated gun shots at the house of the police officer woke up neighbours who rushed to Patel’s house and found Patel was lying in a pool of blood with his wife and his two children.
A police team too reached at Patel’s house within 20 minutes as the area comes under Maoist insurgency-hit Bastar region, confirmed that Patel had fired at his family members intentionally and at the end he himself shot dead.
As per police Patel and his wife died on the spot while their son and daughter were first taken to Maharani Hospital in Jagdalpur and then referred to Raipur as their condition was stated to be extremely critical.
Chhattisgarh home minister Ramsewak Paikra and several top-ranked officers posted at police headquarters in Raipur visited to Ramkrishna Care Hospital on Tuesday in state capital where the two child were put in ICU.
Doctors who are operating upon them at Ramkrishna Care Hospital said that both the children had sustained bullet injuries and were battling for life despite successful surgeries.
Meanwhile, opposition Congress has trained guns on the issue at the BJP government and alleged that earlier too the young officers had committed suicides in separate cases during the BJP regime in the state which included death of IPS officer Rahul Sharma who shot himself dead in March 2012 when he was Bilaspur district’s Superintendent of Police.
