There is a need to simplify laws and procedures related to the consumer so that the common consumer gets justice quickly and within a reasonable time, said Justice Gautam Chourdiya on Tuesday.
The Chhattisgarh State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (SCDRC) Chairman was addressing a seminar on promotion and awareness of consumer interests here.
A consumer, Pravati Sahu, inaugurated the state-level Consumer Assistance and Counselling Centre.
Chourdiya said the centre will be able to provide proper guidance and advice to the consumers. The job is to provide relief to the common people. The institutions should not become an instrument of trouble.
He said that efforts were on to fill the vacant posts at the state and district level as soon as possible with the cooperation of the government.
Topeshwar Verma, Secretary, Food Department, said a corpus fund was being set up with the joint contribution of the Central and state governments. The interest received from this amount will be used in consumer law awareness campaigns.
Udayalakshmi Singh Parmar, Registrar, SCDRC, said the centre will provide free consultation related to consumer matters. If any consumer is unable to pay a fee to hire an advocate, assistance will be provided. Mediation facility is also being extended.
