Congress workers continue demo against sterilisation tragedy

Furious over the death of at least 13 women in the sterilisation camp in Bilaspur district, a number of Congress party workers on Friday staged a demonstration at Gandhi ground here. The agitators, as a medium to register their protest against the incident, demanded resignation of Chief Minister Raman Singh and Health Minister Amar Agrawal.

later, the personnel from Kotwali police station stopped the protestors from setting the effigies of the CM and Health Minister on fire. The cops arrested at least seven people including Congress leader, Ajaj Dhebar.

“The incident has brought shame to the State as well as the nation globally. It has drawn everyone’s attention towards the dilapidated Government-run medical services and corruption in purchasing of life saving medicines and medical equipments in the State,” alleged Dhebar.

later, a case was registered against him along with eight other protestors with Kotwali police station. Meanwhile, senior Congress leader, Mohammad Akbar accused the Government for ‘pretending’ to take strict action by lodging FIR in the case.

“In similar cases reported in past, the State Government had lodged FIR in infamous Colour Doppler case and the scam of purchasing spurious medical equipments but had later withdrawn the cases after few months” he alleged.

In Bilaspur, former leader of Opposition Ravindra Choubey said that although the Government has arrested the surgeon but only one doctor can’t be held responsible for the entire episode.

He said that the hospital where the camp was held was not in use for a long time and the equipment were rusty and the environment was unhygienic.

Choubey stated :  “Congress demands appointment of a Supreme Court Judge or Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the case. ''
