Congress welcomes, BJP terms it meager

The Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) on Monday welcomed the Chhattisgarh cabinet's decision to reduce the Value Added Tax (VAT) on petrol and diesel while the Bharatiya Janata Party termed it a meager cut.

VAT on diesel will be reduced by 2 percent and on petrol by 1 percent. The decision will cause a loss of Rs 1,000 crores to the state government.

PCC President Mohan Markam said that by reducing VAT, the government of Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel has shown that providing relief to common man is the priority.

Now, the Central government should further slash the excise rate on petrol and diesel to provide further relief to the people.

The state government had never hiked VAT on petrol-diesel since it came to power in 2018. It is the Central government which hiked the excise duty manifold.

BJP state President Vishnudeo Sai called the decision a mockery. The relief to people will not cross Re 1 for petrol and for diesel it will range from Rs 1.25 to Rs 1.50.
