Congress suspends youth leaders

The Congress on Tuesday suspended Abhya Barua and Nikki Bhandari from the primary membership of the party a day after two groups led by them attacked each other in Bilaspur.

The scuffle between activists of the youth wing and the National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) erupted on Monday in the presence of State Congress chief Bhupesh Baghel. The National Students’ Union of India (NSUI) launched a membership campaign about a month ago for the college union election. Monday was the last day of the campaign and it ended at about 4 pm.

The trouble started when both the groups clashed with each other over the alleged irregularities in the procedure of the memberships. A state of chaos was created at the scene when some they attacked each other and some even using deadly weapons. The situation became so uncontrollable that police had to intervene. When the scuffle became chaotic, police had to baton charge to bring back normalcy.

Baghel took stock of the situation and suspended Abhya Barua and Nikki Bhandari from the primary membership of the party for their involvement in the violence. He warned that the Congress party will not tolerate any indiscipline.
