Opposition Congress raised the issue of cane-charge on protesters in Akaltara (Bilaspur) by the police and demanded for discussion through adjournment motion in the Chhattisgarh legislative Assembly on Monday.
Speaker Gaurishankar Agrawal rejected the notice while stating that the State Government has already given explanation in this regard on March 20. Immediately after the Question Hour, Congress member Motilal Devangan raised the issue and requested the Speaker to hold discussion on the issue.
Agrawal said that the Government has given its reply on the issue on March 20 and hence the notice is not admissible. The Speaker advised the members to go through the rules before giving notice for adjournment motion.
Gaurisha said that notice for adjournment motion is given on issues which warrant immediate attention. By bringing such issues, the weightage of the adjournment motion will be reduced, the Speaker said. Congress member Satyanarayan Sharma and leader of Opposition TS Singhdeo also tried to convince the Speaker by stating that Akaltara issue is a matter of serious concern and it should be permitted for discussion. However, Speaker Gaurisha did not entertain their pleas and continued with the business of the House.
